Alice Ewen Walker - Ward One

Name: Alice Ewen Walker

Age: 37

Occupation: Executive Director, National Alliance for Community Trees

Reason for running: To further community life, improve neighborhood appearance standards, and increase collaboration with county and adjacent town governments.

Your top three priorities:
  1. Community Code Enforcement,
  2. Route 1 Revitalization, and
  3. Building the Bike Path to College Park.
As we experience the consequences of the national real estate crisis, I'm particularly concerned that Riverdale Park should redouble its effort in code enforcement to preserve community property values and appearance standards for all of us who live in the community.

We need to support quality development like the townhouses on Route 1 built by EYA, over 30 of which will be in Riverdale Park.
Our town's vision as codified in the Mixed Use Zoning guidelines for Route 1 and the Riverdale Park town center are critical to our community's future and should be fully enforced.

Going green is a top priority for our town and its residents; breaking ground on the Trolley Trail bike path to College Park will be a great step forward in safe, pleasant alternative transportation that connects our communities.

I also believe that supporting community life through activities like the Farmers Market is critical to our town. Residents value the friendships and informal connections we have to each other as neighbors. Creating a dog park, supporting the farmers market, and promoting jazz and other events at Riversdale are a few examples of investments we should pursue.

Why should people vote for you?

I have been honored to serve my neighborhood the last two years as Ward 1 representative. During this time, I received full support from the council to enact electronic documents policies which made the town government more accessible and transparent to the public. I also successfully championed the move of code enforcement to be overseen by the police department, and supported the hiring of a third code enforcement officer. I have been a strong supporter of the Riverdale Park Farmer's Market, which has seen increased budget support from the government under my term. My goal is to preserve what we love about the neighborhood and build upon it.

Other relevant activities:

  • Volunteer with Riverdale Park Farmers Market for seven years
  • Served on M-UTC Design Review Committee for four years
  • Former Editor of Riverdale Park Town Crier
  • Editor of Riversdale Historical Society Newsletter
