Greening Town Hall

We all know trees are good, right? I like breathing, birds are nice, and the trees that someone planted around my house 50 years ago keep the house cool in the summer. So you'd think we'd all be planting them ... but, we're not. Or at least, if you look at plant sales, most of the stuff we are collectively buying are little ornamental trees like dogwoods or leyland cypress to screen out the neighbors.
In Riverdale Park, we have a lot of very mature trees that may not be alive in 20 years; the time to start planting their successors is now. The Town plants trees in the right-of-way, but that's only about 10% of the available space in town, and it's often cluttered with power lines and other stuff that prevents planting big trees.
So, this is a plea to plant a tree - but not just any tree.
If you have the space, plant a tall-growing shade tree like a white oak or tulip poplar. Or you could be one of the elm pioneers by planting a Princeton elm, one of the new disease-resistant varieties. Or you could plant beech trees, which need TLC in their establishment, but are perfect yard and landscape trees. The possibilities are endless.

I'm moving Emily's post from the WikiTalk page here to a new local green page. Thanks for the conversation starter, Emily! --Dwight 11/18/07
I want to get rp people to go all out for the plas tax like ireland did to rid the stores of plastic bags - in grocery & all stores. How do we make rp aware and how do we start educating people - does eric olsen or anyone know what maryland is doing on this????? Emily
And maybe we could start a little cottage industry making & selling cute sturdy shopping bags for riverdale park people & others.....or get them made for us with proper cute picture of what this canvass bag means to advertise each time we use it
