Hi everyone. I'm moving to the Riverdale Park area this winter, and I wanted to know everyone's opinions of good neighborhoods to live. I plan on renting an apartment, so any views on apartment complexes would be great too. Thanks everyone!

How long do CFLs really last?

Is anyone besides me a little disappointed in the durability of CFLs? I didn't keep records initially -- only after I started having to replace a few. We bought this house in August 2006. I think I systematically started replacing old incandescents with CFLs late that fall, say around the holidays at the end of 2006. I've replaced 4 thus far (and had to replace after little more than a year. The 4th one just went recently.
I now have a log where I record brand, purchase date, warranty info, etc. Wish I'd done it from the beginning.
Has anyone actually calculated energy savings resulting from CFL use in your home? and/or tracked bulb life?

The backyard holy terrors to the other birds are: Redtailed hawk, Cooper hawks, Flickers, Red headed woodpecker, Pileated Woodpeckers, the owl (don't know what kind of owl but it is huge) - the birds all run when these show up. Last year I saw either a Scarlet Taniger or Oriole - it was across the street. Then one year a parakeet and another year a parrot which turned out to be my neighbors. Multiple kinds of ducks in our little ponds around. Note: In china last year,I never saw a single wild bird or heard a wild bird - not even in the countryside. Em

We attended a session at Hyattsville City Hall on Thursday - a woman in Anne Arundel whose work is making demonstration rain gardens (and similar other landscaping) and is very knowledgeable on the native plants of our area. Got us thinking about this topic again.
I can't recall -- did proposed ordinance changes ever get introduced or discussed at Town Council?

The MDE Award List is posted here. Page 2 describes "Green Infrastructure" and on the second page of the tables our project is listed for a grant total of $319,000. Bid Documents must be prepared by July with award in September. Construction must start before December 31, 2009. The grant proposal was prepared by the Center for Watershed Protection and includes a significant public participation component and volunteer work to assist in workshops to design the stormwater retrofits and implement planting. I expect we will discuss this further in the next Public Works Committee meeting, so if you are interested in participating please keep your eye on the agenda for the next meeting and plan on attending.

In terms of how code is implemented, section 4 says that the town may only cut vegetation if it is a weed as defined under the noxious weed law. Is that a correct interpretation?
I'm concerned that there is a hurdle of having to go to court first, before the town can cut the grass of a resident whose grass is taller than 10". As written now, the town would have to go to court and prove that the property owner has not fulfilled the "landowner's rights and responsibilities", and then, after that, the town would proceed with code enforcement.
I also think you may want review any other sections of the town code that deals with the ROW. Residents can't plant trees and shrubs in the ROW (or they can, but the town can yank them out if needed).

RE: question, Plants in ROW
By: ,

The ROW between sidewalk and curb may also present opportunities for native plantings. In this regard it is my understanding that individual parcel owners are responsible for maintaining this public space within their road frontage. Does town ordinance allow plantings within this area? Of course any planting should take into account traffic visibility to ensure that risks are not created.

I thought that April 1 would be the perfect day to re-enact the Riverdale Hyattsville feud. We could do it every year with the purpose of raising money for charity. We also could arrest the mayor and some council members of each place every other year. It would be a fun activity for all and help us to remember our history too. What do you think?

Just wanted to give props to the new bike store in Hyattsville, Arrow Bicycle. The primarily sell Giant brand bikes and a few others. Their store is wonderful, their staff is extremely knowledgeable and friendly, and their customer service is great. We just bought a bike for my wife from them, got my old bike tuned up, and will probably buy a new bike for me soon. Plus, they're mighty close to Riverdale Park!

... After picking up my tuned-up bike, I'd have to say my feeling are a bit more mixed. My wife's new bike is great. My tune-up actually rode worse than when I took in because they replaced the new chain, but failed to notice the stripped down rear cassette, so my chain was skipping. The shifting was off kilter a bit, too. I had to take it back and they were great about fixing the rear cassette (no charge for labor, but $25 for the new cassette plus about 30 minutes of my time for the whole process).

We put in all CFLs in the house last year (late '06/early '07). One in the kitchen just burned out, apparently. I see on the packaging there's a 2 yr warranty. Without a receipt, do i need a lawyer? ;-) Anybody had experience trying to get warranty replacement on an early burn out 7 yr bulb?

I posted this question to the RiverdaleRailFans yahoo group -- I really thought that was an inspired solution but, alas, no answer has been forthcoming. And just today I sat next to an AMTRAK employee riding home on the MARC train... he agreed it makes for a good story, but had no idea if it was true or not.

WELL IT GOES LIKE THIS , CSX IS LETTING M.A.R.C. USE THERE TRACKS FOR PASSENGER SERVICE VIA B&O MAIN LINE (USED TO BE) BUT CSX DOES NOT OWN MARC ITS AMTRAK THAT HAS FULL RIGHTS ON MARC. AND CSX IS DOING OK WITH THAT. CSX IS A HEAVY FRIEGHT RAILROAD AND TO HAVE PASSENGER TRAINS BETWEEN FRIEGHT IS A BIT OF A CHALLENGE FOR "AU' DISPATCHER IN BALTIMORE. SO REALLY CSX CAN SAY "WE DONT WANT PASSENGER TRAINS THOUGH HERE" AND AMTRAK MAY GO AHEAD WITH THAT BUT NOT IN THIS LIFETIME! SO CSX IS NOT REALLY TOLD TO RUNS PASS. TRAINS JUST FREIGHT SERVICE

hey i have been wondering if we'll one day see a train store right in the town center of riverdale park? people even the doll shop owner wants to put the idea forward to me saying the railfans can control the store and it would be a great thing for the kids to see and then, we'll find people to come in and fix up very old and vintage models like american flyer and lionel train in O scale. i think it would be a hit for riverdale! plus have a coffee shop in the place for railfans to gather during the summer and winter!

Nothing would be better than to see his happen! I often think of the model trains store in Mt. Airy, which is right next door to a very nice coffee house.
If wishing would only make it so! The challenge is how to make it happen!

Dwight, thanks to Alice Walker, we have access to pictures of native landscaped gardens, not local, however. They're part of a Power Point Presentation. Go to: http://www.epa.gov/reg3esd1/garden/links.htm#s Click (download PDF). It only took several seconds for my high speed connection.
